Essentials for Traveling with Teens and Tweens

Traveling with kids aged 10-17 requires a slightly different set of essentials compared to younger children.

Here are six essentials for traveling with older kids:

Technology and Entertainment:

Older kids often enjoy having access to their gadgets and entertainment options during travel. Make sure to pack devices like smartphones, tablets, or laptops loaded with their favorite movies, TV shows, music, and games. Noise-canceling headphones can be particularly useful for long flights or car rides.

Travel Documents:

Ensure that each child has their passport (if traveling internationally), ID card, or any necessary travel documents. If traveling with just one parent or without both parents, you may need additional documentation such as a consent letter from the absent parent(s) or legal guardian(s).

Money and Budgeting:

Give them or have them earn a small budget for souvenirs or snacks and teach them how to manage their money responsibly. Consider providing them with a prepaid travel card or some cash in the local currency to use during the trip. This can help foster independence and teach valuable financial skills.

Communication Devices:

Equip older kids with communication devices such as cell phones or walkie-talkies to stay in touch with you, especially in crowded or unfamiliar locations. Make sure they have your contact information and know what to do in case of an emergency.

Comfort Items and Essentials:

Just like younger children, older kids may have comfort items they prefer to have with them while traveling. Whether it's a favorite pillow, blanket, or stuffed animal, encourage them to pack these items to help them feel more comfortable and at ease during the trip. Additionally, don't forget to pack any necessary medications, toiletries, and personal care items.

Itinerary Involvement:

Involve older kids in the trip planning process and discuss the itinerary with them beforehand. Allow them to have a say in activities, attractions, and dining options to make the trip more enjoyable for everyone. Consider giving them the responsibility of researching and planning certain aspects of the trip, which can help them feel more engaged and excited about the journey.
