What is Real ID?

Real ID is a federally mandated form of identification designed to enhance security measures within the United States. It contains specific features that verify your identity, making it crucial for domestic air travel and accessing federal facilities.

Starting May 7, 2025, it will be the standard requirement for boarding flights, ensuring safer travels for all passengers. You have just over a year to ensure your Real ID is compliant before your next adventure to avoid last-minute hurdles.

You will need to prove:

  • Full legal name (birth certificate or valid passport)

  • Date of birth (birth certificate or valid passport)

  • Legal presence in the United States (valid passport or current license/ID)

  • Social Security number (SSN card)

  • 1-2 documents from various sources proving current street addresses

  • Proof of name change (if applicable)

The process is similar to renewing your driver's license at your local BMV, and you can find more details regarding your state's requirements here.

If you're thinking the enforcement date has moved for Real ID several times, you are right!  And there's no guarantee it won't be postponed again. I'll keep you updated if it does change, but I want to ensure you're aware of the current date so you can get your update when you go for your license or state id renewed instead of having to make a special (and unwanted) trip to the DMV.
